An Artistic Touch

Designers Pratik Sidhpura and Devang Patel of P&D Associates throw some light on the nuances of decorating your bathroom with art, in subtle and chic tones …

Contemporary and quirky artworks are introduced to add a pop of colour with interpretation of one’s own will. Abstract images bring in poise and individuality to the space. Paired with a carefully selected WC, basin and sanitary fittings, it makes for a cohesive aesthetic.

Devang and Pratik shares some useful tips…

Guidelines on selecting appropriate artwork for the bathroom…

Selection of art for any space is always non-stressful, as you can change it whenever you like. We use artworks that speak to their owners’ preferences. Some artworks add an element of quirk while others are purely to bring life to the space. Whether you’ve recently completed a remodel of your forever home, or your only contribution has been the paint colour on the walls of your rental, recall the initial mood you were seeking when you first began decorating. Were you dreaming of a playful, modern space or an escape that’s nature-inspired? Decide whether you want the space to be serene, elegant, calming or otherwise – that will guide you to your selection. One of our favourite spots for bathroom art is opposite a mirror so when you’re getting ready you can enjoy a glimpse of it. Also consider hanging wall art at a vantage point seen from your shower. Don’t worry too much about the colour story matching your space – contrasting art pieces always look good!

Factors to keep in mind when designing bathrooms to have a sense of homogeneity with one another but still be distinct in look…

Sometimes, the essence of luxury isn't in abundance but in the absence of the unnecessary. A bathroom with lots of open space is a great example of a spa-like look with just the essentials. A classic marble countertop with a similar colour-set of basins and WC fittings give a space all the character it needs. Less is always more when it comes to bathroom design.

Play of materials for the wet and dry areas as opposed to a single one….

Scale and proportion of the space is important when you are using a single marble. It could appear grand if played right, or it could look really cramped if you don’t have a good height for it. Colour tones also matter when it comes to single marble spaces. While using mosaic tiles, colour blocking or patterns, you can define your wet and dry spaces to give them a neater look.
