Colour Blocking

Working with hues and textures in distinctive varieties to brighten up a space, has its own charm. Ahmedabad-based architect Veeram Shah of Design Ni Dukaan shows us how…

DESIGN VS BRIEF

For every project, we do a thorough study of the client's background, their beliefs, current and envisioned lifestyle. Their requirements and visions for the house become the brief of the project. The design thus revolves around this brief to fulfil the functional factors but with artistic elements and approach. Materials, sizes, finishes, etc thus become tools to aid the design.

MATERIAL VS VISUAL APPEAL

We usually prefer using one or at the most two materials in the bathroom, each defining the different wet and dry areas. The decision of what material to use and to what extent comes from the visual we need to achieve for the individual bathrooms. For instance, a single material in the entire bathroom works to achieve a seamless visual whereas two materials help in breaking the continuity and highlighting parts wherever required. It all comes down to what the design demands.

WHITE VS COLOUR

We like one material / colour to stand out in the bathroom and thus the other elements go in whites with wood which is a staple.Currently, we're also trying our hands on working with a monochromatic bathroom – where all the finishes would be in the tones and shades of a single colour. In our executions so far, we've stuck to white grouting but are looking forward to experimenting with coloured grouts in some of our on-going projects. In general, I prefer neutral-coloured grouts with brighter tones on the mosaic.

Veeram’s Tips On Working Colour Into Your Bath Space

  • If the rest of the project is in neutrals and monotones, add some colour to the bathrooms
  • Be bold and use bright colours in the bathrooms – balance them out with other neutral accents
  • You can also just go wholehearted colour and let the complete bathroom be in a single shade
  • Try to balance out the use of colour by introducing muted tones in other elements of the bathroom. For instance, if the wall and floor finishes are bright, the fixtures, mirrors, lights can become minimal elements within such a space

“I have been heading Design Ni Dukaan for the past seven years, taking projects of various scales from architecture and interiors to furniture. My sensitivity to design comes from my various travels to quaint old Indian towns, where architecture is not born out of rational thought, but out of social context and cultural needs. I perceive design as fragments of collective experiences and observations from the mundane to the profound.”
