Making A Splash

Priya Lakhotia Parikh of Chicago Studio helps with some clever guidance on how to design a powder bathroom…

The brief for this space was to make a one-of-a-kind powder bathroom, which should be modern, yet have a hint of colour and an ethnic touch to it. We used natural textured stone on the walls and selected a Turkish Kohler basin. The arched mirror, hanging decorative lights made from marble and the greenish-grey marble flooring all came together perfectly. To get such a timeless looking basin fit in place with all the other materials was not an easy task – it was quite an exercise to get the countertop quartz cut and adjusted to the correct size of the basin before we got the perfect fit!

Tips On Intensifying Your Powder Room Decor

  • Always keep in mind that the proportion of the mirror and the lights has to be balanced and not look mismatched
  • Sometimes, just one light acts as a classic art piece. If they’re small and simple, you can play around with more lights to make sure there’s enough illumination
  • The powder washroom doesn’t have a shower, so little or no maintenance is required if you choose to have a wooden ceiling. Remember to frequently wipe it down and hand polish it after a period of time, to keep it always looking fresh and new
  • Keep one of the elements of your powder room as the centre of attraction, and have all the other sanitaryware and accessories complement it in a subtle way. One piece, if chosen right, can add enough drama to the space rather than crowding it with numerous decor items
  • Select only what’s needed – if you can do without adding a shower area, don’t overthink it. Don’t add too many elements just to fill up the space. Clean and simple is always the way to go!
  • Everything from the ceiling and the fittings to the wall material and the mirrors too should be properly planned out beforehand. Every element of the powder room is important, so make sure they all flow together and nothing looks out of place or forced in. Investing in good fittings is a must as well, as these can really elevate the overall look of your bathroom
