Talking Shop With Arvind Soni

Whether it’s simple, timeless designs or bathrooms with skyline views; whether spaces in hues of greys or off-whites for a gentleman or lady – interior designer Arvind Soni has some easy tips to share…

Loos with Views…

These are projects that we have done for some high-rise apartments and master bathrooms in private villas. We never leave an opportunity to create a small private garden with flowers, attached to a master bathroom, adding in hidden service doors for the maintenance, from outside. We once designed a bathroom for a house on the 48th floor, where all the rooms and bathrooms had a sea view. For privacy, we installed glass panels with sandwiched, motorised blinds, which turned out to be ideal. Blinds are needed not only for privacy but also to protect marble and hardware from direct sunlight.

Commercial v/s Private Bathrooms…

The materials used for commercial bathrooms should be light and crisp, without too many contrasts. Most importantly, one must pay attention to the quality of base materials. For commercial toilets, we always use tiles and heavy-duty hardware. The slabs should also be scratch-free and easy to maintain. It’s vital that the materials should make the bathroom look new even after several years, and the hardware should easily be replaceable with newer models every few years too.

The look of private bathrooms should resonate with the personality of the house. I always use very light marbles. The hardware and sanitary ware of private bathrooms should be of exceptional quality. Those who have wardrobes in their bathrooms should do termite treatments frequently, and make sure never to have water pipes or air conditioner pipes going through that area. Every space can also be enhanced with a few simple modifications by using cove lighting and large mirrors.

Sprucing Up Monochrome Spaces…

Wallpapers look great in all kinds of bathrooms. We sometimes do one complete wall with nice wallpaper when working with an all-white bathroom. If it’s a powder room, we introduce Italian mosaic or commission a beautiful artwork for one wall. Using the best quality material in terms of marble and hardware is important. The colours of a muted bathroom should be such that the accessories should stand out even in the future when you wish to replace them for a different look.
